Arabian Leopard Conservation Breeding Center Joins European Association of Zoos and Aquaria
Riyadh, January 12, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Arabian Leopard Conservation Breeding Center, managed by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), has become the first institution in Saudi Arabia to gain membership in the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). This landmark achievement underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to biodiversity preservation and the protection of critically endangered species, such as the Arabian leopard.
A Milestone for Conservation Efforts
The EAZA accreditation recognizes the center’s vital role in the conservation of the Arabian leopard, classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 1996. Membership provides the center access to a global network of experts, enabling collaborations on animal care, biodiversity, and breeding programs to further its mission of protecting and increasing the leopard population.
Rapid Progress Under RCU Management
Since the center came under RCU’s management in 2020, the population of Arabian leopards has grown from 14 to 31 individuals, marking significant progress in conservation efforts. The center recorded notable successes in 2023, with the birth of seven cubs, following the arrival of five cubs in 2022, including a rare set of triplets.
RCU’s efforts are guided by a comprehensive framework that integrates wildlife conservation and sustainability, aligning with broader initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030, which prioritize reforestation, environmental restoration, and sustainable eco-tourism.
Reintroduction to Natural Habitats
A key goal of the breeding program is to reintroduce the Arabian leopard to its natural habitats in AlUla, a region renowned for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. This initiative supports both environmental sustainability and eco-tourism development, positioning AlUla as a global leader in conservation-driven tourism.
Strengthened by International Collaboration
RCU Vice President for Wildlife Natural Heritage, Dr. Stephen Browne, emphasized the importance of the EAZA membership:"This accreditation is an important step to support efforts to protect and conserve the Arabian leopard. It connects us to an international network of experts, equipping our team with the latest knowledge and resources to further our mission of increasing the Arabian leopard population and preserving its natural habitat."
Membership in EAZA enhances the center’s capabilities to participate in joint breeding programs and leverage global expertise, ensuring that the Arabian leopard is not only protected but thrives in its restored natural environment.
Aligning Conservation with Vision 2030
The Arabian Leopard Conservation Breeding Center exemplifies Saudi Arabia’s dedication to safeguarding its natural heritage. By combining cutting-edge conservation practices with sustainable development goals, the initiative supports the Kingdom’s broader aspirations under Vision 2030, promoting environmental stewardship and positioning Saudi Arabia as a leader in global biodiversity preservation.
This milestone serves as a beacon of hope for the Arabian leopard and a testament to Saudi Arabia’s resolve to protect its unique wildlife for future generations.
