Falconers in Rafha Prepare for Hunting Season with Intensive Falcon Training
Riyadh, October 20, 2024 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – In the vast wilderness of Rafha Governorate, located in the Northern Borders Region, falconers are hard at work preparing their prized birds for the upcoming hunting season. As the season approaches, falconers dedicate themselves to training their falcons, ensuring they are ready for the hunt.
The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) observed falconers engaging in various training activities, with a popular method being Al-Tilwah. This technique involves the use of a bird-shaped decoy designed to resemble the wings of a bustard, one of the falcon's natural prey. The decoy is attached to a rope about one and a half meters long, which the falconer swings in the air to capture the falcon's attention. This practice encourages the bird to swoop down and catch the decoy, honing its hunting abilities.
Falconers in the region say that the ideal training time is from late afternoon until sunset, as it aligns with the falcons' natural hunting habits. The training period can last anywhere from two weeks to a month, depending on how quickly the falcon responds and learns. Falconers remain committed to this process until they are confident in their bird's hunting skills and ability to return reliably to its owner after a successful catch.
The falconers also shared insights into the dietary management of their birds during the hunting season. According to the falconers interviewed by SPA, it is essential not to feed falcons full or even half portions of meat during training. Instead, they are given small amounts to maintain their hunger, motivating them to hunt and return to their owners for sustenance.
With the hunting season approaching, falconers in Rafha are diligently preparing their falcons for what they hope will be a successful and rewarding season in the wilderness.
