French Foreign Minister Urges Israel to Refrain from Ground Invasion of Lebanon, Calls for Ceasefire
BEIRUT, September 30, 2024 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Monday reiterated his call for Israel to refrain from launching a ground invasion of Lebanon, as tensions continue to escalate in the region.
"I urge Israel to refrain from any ground incursion and to cease fire. I also call on Hezbollah to do the same and refrain from actions that could destabilize the region," Barrot told reporters during a visit to Lebanon.
Barrot emphasized that France will increase its support for the Lebanese army, aiming to assist the country in maintaining stability amid the ongoing conflict.
Israel has launched a two-week-long wave of airstrikes on Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah leaders, including the group's chief Hassan Nasrallah, and several commanders. The strikes have killed approximately 1,000 Lebanese civilians and displaced 1 million people from their homes.
Hezbollah has vowed to resist any Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon, pledging to confront Israeli forces if they move forward with the operation.
The situation remains tense, with both sides facing mounting international pressure to de-escalate the conflict.
