Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis Visits Saudi Arabia’s UNESCO Heritage Site Hegra

Riyadh, January 13, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, visited Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in AlUla Governorate, as part of his official visit to the Kingdom.


Accompanied by Governor of the Madinah Region Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Commerce Majid Al-Kassabi, and Executive Director of the Royal Commission for AlUla Amr AlMadani, the Greek prime minister explored some of the most prominent landmarks and archaeological sites dating back thousands of years.


A Journey Through History


The delegation toured several significant locations, including:


  • Qasr al-Farid, a remarkable pre-Islamic archaeological site known for its unique rock-cut tomb and intricate architectural design.

  • Qasr al-Bint, another prominent site showcasing the architectural ingenuity of ancient civilizations.

  • Jabal Ithlib, a historical landmark designed as an open-air theater, blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape.


The visit also included stops at ancient sites and artefacts scattered throughout AlUla, offering a glimpse into the diverse civilizations that once thrived in the region.


Preserving Cultural Heritage


The preservation of these iconic sites is overseen by the Royal Commission for AlUla, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Saudi Tourism Authority, and other organizations. These efforts ensure that AlUla remains a vital part of global human heritage, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s rich history and its commitment to cultural preservation.

The visit highlights the growing cultural and diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Greece, underscoring their shared dedication to preserving and celebrating human heritage. Prime Minister Mitsotakis’s tour of Hegra reflects the Kingdom’s role as a global hub for culture, tourism, and historical exploration.
