PARIS, France - A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 shook parts of western France on Friday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).
The earthquake's epicenter was near a commune in the Charente-Maritime region of western France, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), GFZ said.
There was no immediate information on casualties or damage from the quake.
The GFZ revised an earlier measurement of 5.5. magnitude earthquake.
The quake was felt as far as Bordeau, Nantes, and Poitiers, according to local media reports. Some residents reported hearing a loud rumble and feeling their houses shake.
France is not a seismically active country, but it does experience occasional earthquakes, mostly in the Pyrenees and the Alps. The last major earthquake in France occurred in 1909 when a 6.2 magnitude quake killed 46 people and injured hundreds more in Provance.
