Palestinian Leaders Mourn Pope Francis, Hailing Him as a Symbol of Tolerance and Peace

Paris, April 21 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Palestinian leaders have joined the global chorus of condolences following the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing him as a powerful advocate for peace and human dignity, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, sent an official message of condolence to the Vatican, praising the late pontiff as “a symbol of tolerance, love, and fraternity.” Abbas highlighted Pope Francis’s efforts to defend humanitarian values and promote justice, particularly for oppressed peoples around the world.

The statement from the Palestinian leadership also recalled Pope Francis’s final Easter Sunday address, delivered from St. Peter’s Square, in which he offered a heartfelt appeal for the people of Gaza, with special mention of the Christian community enduring severe hardships. “The terrible conflict continues to cause death and destruction and to create a dramatic and deplorable humanitarian situation,” the Pope said.

Pope Francis had consistently spoken out against the violence in Gaza and frequently urged both sides to end hostilities. “Call a ceasefire, release the hostages, and come to the aid of a starving people that aspires to a future of peace!” he urged during his final public address.

Throughout the war, Pope Francis remained in direct communication with Christian leaders in Gaza, including Father Gabriele Romanelli, parish priest of the Holy Family Church, where both Christians and Muslims have sought refuge from the ongoing bombardment.

In a separate statement, Hamas expressed “heartfelt condolences” to Catholics worldwide, acknowledging Pope Francis’s *“significant stances in promoting the values of dialogue between religions and advocating for understanding and peace among peoples, as well as rejecting hate and racism.”

Pope Francis’s long-standing commitment to interfaith dialogue, religious tolerance, and the protection of civilians in conflict zones earned him widespread respect among Palestinian leaders and communities. His passing marks the end of a papacy deeply engaged in the pursuit of peace and human solidarity in one of the world’s most troubled regions.
