Riyadh – Saudi Arabia Breaking News | March 27, 2025 - Saudi Arabia marked the second annual Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Day today, commemorating the ambitious environmental framework launched in 2021 by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the SGI. The initiative underscores the Kingdom’s strategic vision to lead environmental transformation and support sustainable development in line with Vision 2030.

Launched as a comprehensive and community-driven initiative, SGI integrates environmental protection, energy transition, and sustainability programs. Its central goals include reducing and offsetting emissions, expanding afforestation and land rehabilitation, and protecting the Kingdom’s land and marine ecosystems.

This year’s SGI Day, held under the theme “Promoting a culture of environmental stewardship,” capped a month-long national campaign uniting citizens, government bodies, private sector entities, and non-profits in a shared mission to confront environmental challenges and build a more sustainable future.

Throughout March, local communities engaged in awareness campaigns, with SGI launching two major digital initiatives: #GreenRamadan, which encouraged households to adopt sustainable practices such as minimizing food waste and conserving energy, and #PawsToChangeChallenge, led by SGI’s mascot Namour, inspiring youth to share eco-friendly habits via social media. A live mosaic on the SGI Day website captured these grassroots efforts and continues to showcase them throughout Ramadan and beyond.

This year’s celebration follows the momentum generated by the SGI Forum, held in conjunction with the UNCCD COP16 Conference in Riyadh in December. The forum provided a platform for global policymakers, business leaders, and experts to discuss climate action and green transformation, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in shaping regional and global environmental policy.

Backed by investments exceeding SAR705 billion, SGI now drives over 85 initiatives across the Kingdom’s 13 regions. In 2024 alone, the Kingdom added 6.6 GW of renewable energy to the grid, with 44.2 GW under development, alongside the operation of 5.6 GW of high-efficiency gas plants under the Liquid Fuel Displacement Program.

On the ecological front, 115 million trees have been planted, and 118,000 hectares of degraded land rehabilitated—equivalent to over 165,000 football fields. More than 7,500 endangered species have been rewilded through targeted conservation programs, including efforts to protect the Arabian oryx, sand gazelle, ibex, houbara bustard, and cheetahs.

SGI Day 2025 stands as a national testament to Saudi Arabia’s deepening environmental commitment, highlighting how strategic leadership, public participation, and innovation can converge to forge a resilient and green future for generations to come.
