Saudi Arabia Railways Achieves Record Growth in 2024, Expands Passenger and Freight Operations
RIYADH, February 17, 2025 (SAUDI ARABIA BREAKING NEWS) – Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has set new records in 2024, transporting over 13 million passengers, marking a 22% increase from the previous year. Freight operations also saw significant growth, moving more than 28 million tons of goods and minerals, reflecting a 15% rise, solidifying SAR’s critical role in enhancing the Kingdom’s transport sector and logistics services.
Transforming Pilgrimage Travel
During the 1445 AH Hajj season, the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line transported over two million pilgrims, significantly reducing road congestion and enhancing the pilgrimage experience. The success of this initiative highlights SAR’s contribution to efficient, safe, and sustainable travel during peak religious events.
Passenger train services expanded as well, with over 35,000 trips recorded, a 19% increase, reflecting a growing preference for safe and reliable rail travel across the Kingdom.
Freight Expansion and Sustainability Impact
SAR’s freight operations played a crucial role in sustainability efforts, successfully diverting over two million truck trips from Saudi roads. This shift led to fuel savings of more than 113 million liters, reducing carbon emissions and improving overall road safety and infrastructure longevity. These initiatives align with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy’s environmental objectives, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to a greener, more efficient transport system.
Major Achievements and Infrastructure Growth
A landmark milestone in 2024 was the launch of "Dream of the Desert", the first luxury rail experience in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as a leader in high-end tourism. Additionally, SAR inaugurated a new freight rail route in Al-Ahsa, designed to enhance traffic safety and improve railway efficiency outside urban areas.
SAR also secured 63 strategic agreements with various entities, strengthening partnerships to drive future railway expansion and modernization efforts.

SAR’s dedication to safety and operational excellence was reaffirmed with the attainment of six international certifications, recognizing its high-quality operational standards.
