Saudi Arabia Welcomes Japanese Art: Manga Hokusai Manga Exhibition Opens at SAMoCA

Riyadh, January 15, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMoCA) at Jax District inaugurated the Manga Hokusai Manga exhibition today, marking a historic cultural milestone. Attended by Japan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Yasunari Morino, the exhibition celebrates the timeless art of Japanese master Katsushika Hokusai while fostering cross-cultural dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Japan.

The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation, is the first of its kind to be showcased in an Arab country. Running until February 8, 2025, the event coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Japan, symbolizing a deepening cultural and artistic partnership.

A Journey Through Japanese Art and Manga

At the heart of the exhibition lies Hokusai’s Hokusai Manga, a collection of over 4,000 sketches published between 1814 and 1834 during Japan’s Edo period. The works explore themes of daily life, landscapes, and fantastical creatures, showcasing the artist’s mastery and creativity. Hokusai’s innovative approach to illustration not only redefined Japanese art but also laid the foundation for what would become modern manga.

Visitors to the exhibition are invited to trace the evolution of manga, experiencing the rich interplay between classical Japanese illustrations and contemporary visual arts. The exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the historical roots of one of Japan’s most influential cultural exports while demonstrating how Hokusai’s legacy continues to inspire artists worldwide.

Cultural Renaissance Under Vision 2030

As Saudi Arabia’s first contemporary art museum, SAMoCA is a cornerstone of the nation’s cultural transformation under Vision 2030. The museum provides a platform for dialogue, exchange, and artistic growth, fostering connections between Saudi artists and the global art community.

“The Manga Hokusai Manga exhibition is a testament to our commitment to cultural collaboration and the celebration of global art forms,” a SAMoCA spokesperson stated. “It embodies the spirit of Vision 2030 by bridging artistic traditions and innovation, enriching the Kingdom’s cultural landscape.”
