Saudi Press Agency Captures Elusive Sand Cat in Northern Borders Region
Riyadh, October 17, 2024 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Saudi Press Agency has successfully captured rare images of the sand cat in various wild areas east of Arar in the Northern Borders region. Once at risk of extinction due to poaching and habitat loss, the sand cat has started to reemerge, supported by newly established nature reserves and ongoing environmental protection initiatives.
Recognizable by its pale sandy to grey-brown coat, the sand cat also features distinct dark stripes on its legs and red markings on its cheeks. This elusive feline has a wide head, large eyes, and low-set ears, making it well-adapted for life in the desert. Short limbs and an ability to dig allow the sand cat to build burrows, where it shelters from extreme desert conditions and conserves water and energy.
Nasser Al-Majlad, Director of the Aman Environmental Association, highlighted the significance of the Northern Borders region as a diverse habitat for wildlife. “Our region supports an array of species, thriving in varied landscapes from mountains and valleys to plateaus and ravines. The abundance of plant life here plays a crucial role in sustaining these ecosystems,” he said.
Primarily active during dawn and dusk, sand cats have adapted to desert life by digging burrows that protect them from intense heat and predators. Their resilience in such a harsh environment exemplifies the adaptability of the region’s wildlife.
The resurgence of the sand cat signifies a positive step toward conservation and reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to safeguarding its natural heritage through dedicated environmental policies.
