Athens, April 2 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Severe storms swept across several Greek islands for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, with the island of Crete experiencing the most intense rainfall, according to national meteorological authorities.
Rescue teams on Crete assisted seven individuals trapped in vehicles by rising floodwaters as heavy rain triggered rockslides and forced the closure of roads. The National Observatory of Athens reported that the heaviest rainfall over a 24-hour period was recorded near the Cretan port city of Chania.
Elsewhere in the Cyclades, the islands of Paros and Mykonos were hit by hailstorms and torrential downpours. On Paros, Monday's storm sent cars floating into the sea and inundated homes and businesses with water and mud. Authorities have requested emergency government aid to address widespread damage to roads and infrastructure. Mykonos also experienced strong winds and storm-related disruption.
On the island of Rhodes, gale-force winds toppled trees and damaged vehicles, while schools were closed across multiple islands and ferry services were suspended or delayed due to dangerous conditions.
The affected islands are part of the Cyclades chain in the central Aegean Sea, a region known for its tourism and iconic whitewashed architecture. The storm system comes just weeks after a rare earthquake swarm prompted evacuations on Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi.
Emergency services remain on high alert as authorities continue damage assessments and recovery efforts.
