UAE and Cyprus Strengthen Strategic Ties During High-Level Talks in Abu Dhabi





Abu Dhabi, September 11, 2024 – President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and His Excellency Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, held discussions in Abu Dhabi today, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation and exploring opportunities to deepen strategic relations between the two nations, particularly in the economic and developmental sectors.


During the meeting, which took place in the UAE capital, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed warmly welcomed President Christodoulides and expressed his best wishes for a successful and constructive visit. The UAE President emphasized his confidence that this engagement would further strengthen cooperation between the UAE and Cyprus across various sectors.


The discussions centered on reviewing UAE-Cyprus relations and exploring joint efforts to advance ties, particularly in the fields of economy, trade, investment, and energy. Both leaders stressed the importance of leveraging these opportunities to benefit the peoples of both countries.



Regional and International Issues Addressed



In addition to bilateral cooperation, the two presidents exchanged views on several regional and international issues of common interest, with a particular focus on developments in the Middle East. Both leaders underscored the importance of de-escalating tensions in the region to avoid further instability that could threaten peace and security. They highlighted the necessity of open dialogue and diplomatic efforts to resolve ongoing global conflicts.



Humanitarian Aid to Gaza



A key topic of discussion was the cooperation between the UAE and Cyprus in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Amalthea maritime corridor initiative. Both leaders underscored the urgency of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the need for unimpeded and sustainable humanitarian support for its residents.


His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed expressed his appreciation for Cyprus' contributions to facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza, particularly through the maritime corridor between the two nations. He reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to working closely with Cyprus, as well as with regional and international partners, to enhance these efforts.

The meeting was attended by several high-level officials, including H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; and Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation. The President of Cyprus was accompanied by a delegation of senior officials from his government.


This meeting marks a significant step forward in the UAE-Cyprus relationship, further solidifying their shared commitment to strategic cooperation and regional stability.
