UAE Introduces Mandatory Genetic Testing in Premarital Screening for Emiratis Starting January 2025
RIYADH, Dec. 26 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced that genetic testing will become mandatory for Emirati couples as part of the premarital screening programme, effective January 2025. This initiative, approved by the Emirates Genome Council during the UAE government’s annual meetings, aims to safeguard the health of future generations and enhance the quality of life for Emirati families.
Announcing the decision on social media, MoHAP stated: “This decision will drive a transformative shift in promoting generational health and a sustainable future for Emirati families.”
The initiative aligns with the UAE’s National Genome Strategy and leverages advanced genomic sciences to position the country as a global leader in genetic disease prevention and reproductive medicine.
The programme will focus on screening for 570 genes linked to over 840 medical conditions, enabling couples to identify risks of passing on genetic disorders to their children. By identifying genetic mutations, the testing empowers couples to make informed decisions about family planning, contributing to sustainable health outcomes.
The Ministry emphasized that the genetic testing programme is supported by a robust national genetic database to facilitate early detection and intervention for genetic diseases. Preparations, including specialized medical staff and advanced technical infrastructure, are underway to ensure smooth implementation.
“This decision represents a paradigm shift in the country’s healthcare sector, emphasizing future technologies to ensure sustainable development and enhanced quality of life in alignment with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071,” MoHAP said.
The programme is a collaborative effort involving MoHAP, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services, and various academic and technological partners. This landmark initiative marks a significant step in advancing public health and ensuring a healthier future for Emirati families.
